Most inspection problems aren’t technical — they’re organizational. The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) wants to see that you have a plan, that it’s implemented, and that someone owns compliance on site.

This post is a practical “be ready” checklist for temporary operations.

1) Know who the AHJ is (it may be more than one)

Depending on your site and services, the AHJ can include:

  • venue safety team
  • local fire authority
  • health department (food operations)
  • building/inspection authority (temporary structures)

The earlier you identify who needs to sign off, the easier everything gets.

2) Put one person in charge of compliance

If “everyone” owns compliance, nobody owns it. Assign:

  • primary compliance contact
  • backup contact for nights/weekends

3) Keep the basics documented

Have a simple packet ready:

  • site map with placement, access routes, and service windows
  • emergency contacts and escalation plan
  • utility plan (power, water, wastewater)
  • vendor list (water truck, pump truck, fuel)

4) Make the site plan inspection-friendly

Common red flags:

  • blocked egress paths
  • cables/hoses crossing guest flow without covers/lighting
  • unclear service access for vendor trucks
  • crowding that creates safety hazards

5) For kitchen operations: plan for the health conversation

If you’re running food service, expect questions about:

  • handwashing and hygiene
  • temperature control
  • cleaning/sanitizing procedures
  • waste handling

Day-of inspection readiness checklist (fast)

  • site map printed or available (placement, routes, service windows)
  • named compliance contact on site (plus backup for nights)
  • utility plan confirmed (power, water, wastewater)
  • visible safety controls (cable ramps/covers, lighting, clear egress)
  • vendor contact list ready (water, pumping, fuel)
