Trips and falls are one of the most common “avoidable” incidents at event sites — especially at night, and especially near high-traffic utilities like power cables and hoses.
This checklist focuses on prevention, not blame.
1) Route utilities like you’re designing a walkway
Best practice:
- keep routes along edges, fences, or behind barriers
- avoid crossing main lines of foot traffic
- avoid pinch points (doorways, steps, tight turns)
2) Cover crossings and mark them clearly
If you must cross a walkway:
- use proper cable/hose covers or ramps
- mark the crossing with high-visibility tape
- add lighting at the crossing
3) Light the path, not just the unit
It’s common to light the trailer and forget the approach. Guests and staff need light on:
- the approach path
- step/threshold areas
- queue areas
4) Keep hoses out of the “blind zone”
The blind zone is where people look at their phone, talk, or move fast. Don’t place hazards there.
5) Set an inspection cadence (and re-check after changes)
Trip hazards are rarely “one-and-done.” Build a habit:
- walk utility routes at shift start and during peaks
- re-seat cable ramps and re-mark crossings after storms or high winds
- re-check when site layout changes (moving fences, stages, queue lines)
Quick checklist (copy/paste)
- route hoses/cables along edges or behind barriers
- avoid pinch points (doors, steps, tight corners)
- cover and mark crossings; light them at night
- re-check after storms, high winds, or layout changes
- post a simple “report an issue” contact method for staff
